[English] Protective custody for 7 of the arrested following protests in solidarity with Greece
Seven of the nine youth arrested (except two minors who were set free yesterday) following protests over the shooting by Greek police of a teenager in Athens were sent to prison.
Court number 31 in Madrid ordered that they were held in protective (or preventive) custody and charged them with injuries, destroying street furniture, assault and resistance upon agents in authority.
The court decided preventive imprisonment without the option to be released on bail due to “production of social unrest ”. They will eventually be taken to Alcalá Meco or Soto del Real prisons.
Servando Rocha, lawyer of the arrested, said “the sentence is wholly unjustified because such social unrest does not exist. Instead, it is an exemplary decision that is going to be appealed. We have intended to have another decision like to sign in court every 15 days, but the judge refused.
